Life, death, and Oreos
So Alphonse is attending a funeral for his niece today who suddenly passed away at the young age of 28. She had surgery a few years back on her stomach and then complained of a slight pain a few weeks ago. Suddenly she just passed away. I know so many people who have died these past few months. It makes you appreciate the doctors and healthcare in the states.
So when Alphonse came back from Lome after figuring out when the funeral was last week we spent the evening discussing life and death and the differences of ideas in different cultures. It was actually a great evening and after much talking I realized that we felt the same way about a lot of things in life. We ate our Fou Fou and listened to a Ghana radio station since it is in english and just enjoyed the night.
The next day I went to the post office and got the package and card mom sent me and the card granny and grandaddy sent me. I keep forgetting it is almost xmas due to the warm weather and not much hype about the holiday here in Togo. The most sacred thing of all in the package was Oreo cookies. Mom you are the love of my life, thank you! I also loved all the letters and made some potatos the other night.
I love you all!

My dearest granddaughter Jessica,
It's so nice to hear from you on your blog, and I know you hate those French keyboards...I'm glad you stayed, and your mother told me that you called and some of your packages take a long time to get to you...I hope mine gets to you fast, like before Christmas...I haven't seen anything about you in the Saratogian yet---do you know if the press release was sent out? Maybe I should call the paper...I keep thinking it's too bad they don't have your story going in a paper about your trip...if you ever decide to let them put it in the paper maybe you could look up Saratogian.com and possibly there's a way to condense your blog and get it in for the citizens to read about it...I know I wouldn't do it for you, and I suppose you would need some kind of permission from someone in the Peace Corps to send it in---I don't know, but the story of you is fabulous, and I'm so proud of you...and your work there...your mom told me about the little girls who help you at home, and how you are now teaching English, and are paying their tuition to attend the school..You're the best...how's the motorcycle working out?? You are definitely something...
Love always,
Grandma Andrea ps:you can cele=

I love you baby - you are my favorite - especially since your brothers are annoying me right now because I made them let me use the computer. HO Ho HO! love momxoxo
Hi Jessica,
I'm still hoping you got my Priority Mail package....in time for Christmas...I keep calling your mother to see if you have it yet...
It's late, so I'm going to bed...I love you, and I'm hoping you're ok...
Love always,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Happy New Year, Miss Jessica....
Yes, I know that it has been the new year for a few hours, there in South Africa, and you almost died from a snakebite---luckily it wasn't your time, and God is watching over my beautiful granddaughter...thank your "big brother" very. very much for saving your life and I think he must be a very wonderful guy....I hope you have your bible with you that I gave you for HS graduation...what I do with mine is open it up and put my finger on the page and wherever it lands, I read the verse or verses and there's always something apropos that seems to be coming from God for whatever may be going on in my life....
Twice now you have been blessed by being saved from disaster, like earlier in the year when that car came through the window, where you usually sat at Panera Bread to do your homework...Wow!!! You are truly blessed....and Thank Heaven!!!
Happy 2009, and I do hope you got your package with your Christmas tree, etc....better late than never...some scientists have said that Jesus was probably born in the Spring or Summer, so you can celebrate His birthday whenever you get the Christmas stuff...
I worked at the NYS Military Museum tonight and got a First Night collectable pin...also a big box of chocolates from my "big boss", Mr. Altman, the president of the NYS Heritage Institute---every year he gives me chocolates, but last year when I got home I couldn't wait to kick off my shoes and dig in....I took off the paper from the box and it was "Hickory Farms!!" Shock, as I was ready to eat the whole box of chocolates...tonight he handed me a box of chocolates, and I almost grabbed him to thank him...he's a big sweetheart....
We had a great time, even though it was 4 degrees or less, and we survived.... I collected money for photos we took of kids and some parents in our WWII Willys Jeep...the money goes towards things for Veteran Programs we put on in the museum that the taxpayers don't pay for...we have a little office in the building where I teke care of memberships and newsletters...When you come home I'll take you through...It's beautiful inside, and down the street from your old Lake Avenue School---It looks like a bit castle...for Veterans it feels sort of like "home." My boss in the office is a former Fleet Commander in the Viet Nam War, and he was a Rear Admiral when he retired from the Navy...he's eighth generation Saratoga Springs...his two little grandson twins were having a ball dancing to the music of the musicians in the back on the stage....one musician was our former Commissioner, Matt McCabe---he didn't run for office last election so he could spend more time with his kids---he owns the guitar shop downtown...I never heard him play and sing, and he is fabulous...
Be real careful, Missy, or I don't know what I would do if anything happened to you....you need a peephole in your doors...the snake that almost got you was a mumbai snake??? hopefully there are no more around your house...
Love, always,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
I meant "big" castle--should have edited...
Love,
Grandma
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Is anybody there, Miss Jessica??
I hope you are ok and I hope you are not close to any more snakes...that scared me to think we almost lost you....your mother said you wrote me a letter, but it hasn't come yet...Did you get your Christmas tree yet, and all of the stuff I sent with it...I love you, and it is late---we are having a few cold and snowy and icy and icky winter days, where I worry that some of the trees could come down if it gets any worse...today I did get out, but yesterday was very icy outside and lots of things were called off...the weather is really weird this winter....
Love always,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Dear Jessica,
Oh my gosh Jessica! I can't believe you almost died and I didn't even know about it! I'm glad it wasn't your time. I must say, I think this is one of the coolest things you could do- The Peace Corps thing, not getting bitten by a snake. I hope your having a good time in the new village. I know you hate the french keyboard, but when I'm writing something for French class, I wish I had one :) Anyways, I gotta get ready for school, so I hope you enjoyed the Oreos :P and I would love to hear from you soon :) I don't know really what else to say, so
Merry late Christmas,
and have a Happy New Year!
WIth love,
Lietspire a.k.a. Troy
P.S. What's this about a motorcycle? Did you get one?
Dear Jessica,
I hope you're ok, and that you are enjoying teaching the children, and that are no more snakes around your house...We are expecting the coldest weather of the winter season, and I hope we don't lose our electricity tonight or tomorrow, as we've lost it before when it got really cold out---once for three days, and it's going to hover around zero and below most of this week...
Take care of yourself---haven't heard if you received the package I sent you---I keep asking your mother if you mentioned getting it, but she said you haven't said...
Be safe and God Bless You, Missy....
Love always,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Dear Jessica,
Hope all is well with you....I thought your mother said you wrote me a letter, but it hasn't come yet...maybe I misunderstood her....It's been below zero here almost every night, and am hoping it'll let up...
Take care, and God Bless You...
Love,
Grandma Andrea
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Hi, Jessica,
Hope you're ok, and that no more scary things are around you, and that you are safe...How's school, and the kids and your "big brother?"
I can't believe my first child---your fabulous mother---will be 46 tomorrow...Wow!!! What does that make me??? Pretty old, I guess---NOT!!! An old boyfriend on the internet is keeping me feeling like a beautiful young thing, all over again, like when he and I went together in the late 1950's...Nothing will probably ever really come of it, but you never know...he's very special, and I used to love him a real lot in the late 1950's...That love, apparently has never died: It's just a little e-mail romance---he's soooo brilliant and cute, though...and he's such a gentleman...That's why I haven't written to you like I should---
I'll tell you more when I send you an e-mail---no letter from you has arrived yet...they say it takes a long time to get here...I am very proud of what you're doing...
Very cold here, and more snow expected tomorrow...
Stay safe...
Love,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxo
Forgot, today is the 27th, so your mother is 46 TODAY! Wow, where does the time go? She said she stopped her birthdays at 45...I thought if her friends are reading your blog they might wish her a Happy Birthday...
Love always,
Grandma Andrea (again) xoxoxoxoxo
i love you, jess xoxomomsmack
Dear Jessica,
I want to thank you so very, very much for the letter and the beautiful drawing of a beautiful African woman in her beautiful colorful garments...You are a fabulous artiste, I must say...I told the man I love, that he should read your blog and he just told me that he did, and that I should be so proud of you...Yes, he's a new man, from an old relationship in my life, and he's very special---someday I'll tell you all about him...
You don't know how happy I was to get your letter yesterday...Your mother is starting to worry about you a little, but says she knows you are really busy with two schools to teach in now...but she said she knows you are fine and don't have a lot of time...I think she is almost over her cold...
Love, always,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxo
now I have to go down the hall to my apt. and write an essay for a DAR contest---my Regent is trusting in me to do it and have it postmarked before Feb. 1...Night, now---or Good Morning probably now, there, right????
Your cousin, Lauren, will be 21 on Sunday, Superbowl Sunday...hope she doesn't drink to celebrate...she's really not a drinker...like us---Right??? xoxoxo... but what a day to turn 21...
Hi, Jess,
We're all hoping you're ok, but your mother seems very worried, which makes me very worried about you---you'd better be ok...
I love you...
Love,
Grandma xoxoxoxo
Dear Granddaughter, Jessica,
How's it going??? I keep hoping you're ok there, and we are watching for you to add to your blog, to know that you are doing well...I hope you're not losing too much weight, as we think you have lost enough pounds...I am glad to know that you said in your letter to me that you wish I could see what you see there in South Africa...so it sounds like it must be very beautiful, but I know it's hot....
Any elephants around yet?? Lions or tigers?? Hopefully not too close to wherever you might be...How's the motorcycle riding going???
I love you, and here it is 12:45 am on Thursday, so I am going down to my apartment and visit "Peachy Keen,." I guess it must be almost time for you to get up there, as I believe you are about 5-6 hours ahead of us.
I love you, Jess..
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Jesse,
I hope you're ok, and your mother and I are starting to get a little worried about you, as she hasn't heard from you in quite a while...I hope you can find a way to let her know that you are ok...so she can let me know...We know that you're very busy, so take care, and stay safe and I hope you're eating and stuff...
I love you always,
Grandma Andrea
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Hey Jess, you out there? What's this I hear about snakes and Motorcycles? I never would have imagined. :) Post something new soon so i can stop worrying... I've been checking lots lately and its been almost 2 months... Where are you? I hope everything is well. I know you're doing a fantastic job and are really busy, but when your mother and grandmother start to worry i get a little anxious. Help us out and keep us updated!
All my love,
Suziā„
Dear Jesse,
Hi...I keep hoping that you will add some more news on your blog...maybe you're broke and can't afford to use the computer in town or something???? I hope you're ok...I'll try to send you some money next week and I hope you have enough food, and art supplies for the children and whatever you and the children are needing...Your mother said you called but the call was cut off, so at least we know you're alive...I know she said she sent you a box so maybe you'll have it soon....Did you ever hear of a Dr.Malthai, or Matthai, or something like that?..she's from Africa and she won an award along with Al Gore for their work for trying to save the planet...she got a big standing ovation along with Al Gore, and it was from the NAACP--I think it was called the "Image" awards on Fox tonight....She was in her native dress and all I could picture was "that's how Jessica dresses now.."
I love you and I hope you're staying safe, and I wish, like you said in your "thank you" note that I could see what you see there...
Goodnight, as I have to go to bed: Conan O'Brien is on here in the tv lounge...I've been really exhausted lately, and the man in my life and I have just broken up for sure tonight...you know how you've always told all of the guys that the women in our family are "heartbreakers??" Well, some of the bratty guys can be heartbreakers also--this was mutual...two geniuses butting heads, and I don't have the time for him anymore...at least not for now...maybe I'll just join a convent or something....I love you, Jessica...Happy Valentine's Day by the way...(How's your "big brother"?----Tell your family there, "hi" for me...)
Love always,
Grandma Andrea xoxoxoxoxo
Dear Jessica,
I am so glad you left a message on your mother's phone at 4:00 this morning, EST...she said she didn't hear it ring and was asleep, but that you said you are fine and healthy, and things are going well...but that you didn't have all that much money in the last few weeks as you only get paid every three weeks...She said she sent you a package, and hoped you'd have it by now..
Gotta sign off,
I'm at the library..
it's snowy and slippery and slushy out, and it's 7:51 pm EST, so I am catching a bus home from in front of the GAP on Broadway--Thank God for the buses...
I love you...be safe and God Bless You All!!!
Love,
Gramdma Andrea xoxoxoxoxo
Jessica,
Thought I'd say goodnight to you, and take care of yourself...
My sweetheart still loves me, and we're fine now, and now he's left for Dubai for a couple of weeks, so we can't argue for that amount of time anyway...
How are the little girls that clean your house?? I'll bet they're cute...How's Alphonse, and how are his family members??
Take care...
I love you always,
Grandma Andrea
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Hey Jess-er-jess. :)
Miss and love you, and think of you often. Hope things are all you dreamed and more.
Love,
Sav
Jess,
It is February 24. Just wondering how you're doing. I checked your page after a long bit of not checking it and saw your last entry was midway through December. I hope you are still doing well. I'm still glad there are people in the world doing the kinds of things you're doing and making a difference. Keep your chin up and leave your mark in Togo. You are missed (in the real world as well as the virtual one. haha)
-Dustin (Twee)
Dear Jesse,
Glad you talked with your mother the other morning---really early....she was so glad to finally hear from you, and we are happy that you are well and doing fine there...She said you could use a tape recorder to tape the children singing the songs you're teaching them...Yes, I told her a few months ago it would be a good idea to send you a tape recorder, so we can hear them singing and so on....
What else do you need??? or want???
So your "little" brother, Randall,II will be 21 on March 4!!! Where does the time go?....and to think he's grown to 6'3 1/2" tall sort of blows my mind...
God Bless you guys over there...kids, family and all..
Love,
Grandma Andrea
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Hey Jess. Looks like you've been keeping quite busy, and having a blast all the while. Reading some of the previous comments as well reveals that you've gone through quite a bit. Making a difference is a big thing and you seem to be doing that well.
Btw, you're a bum for not telling Mama or I about this nifty site to leave you encouraging messages on. I had to learn about it from Twee. But you're forgiven! ;D
Cheers. JB.
